Employee Discipline in an Education Environment
This program was designed by UpSlope Solutions in collaboration with practicing education attorneys administrators and the Technology Based Learning & Research Division of Arizona State University. It is a research-based content driven multimedia professional development program that will equip administrators with the tools and strategies needed to proactively manage the common institutional and personal litigation risks in today’s K-12 academic environment. Utilizing DVD delivery case vignettes templates rubrics and other tools the learning experience for participants is delivered over three modules.
The first module deals with types of employee discipline in an education environment. The second focuses on grounds for employee discipline. The third module centers on the proper execution of employee discipline. Each module is presented during an intensive highly interactive day-long session. Modules can be scheduled over three consecutive days or spread over a period of time.
With the litigious nature of our society today this program has strong potential for reducing a school district’s legal (financial) risk exposure by ensuring that administrators are using the most effective and appropriate discipline for specific situations they encounter.
It is ”must have” training for every school administrator.

- Do you believe the emotions you or others have create less than optimum performance?
- Can emotional people sometimes get you off track?
- Does emotion sometimes cause those in your organization to communicate with each other in counter-productive ways?
Unlike IQ which is fixed at an early age a person’s Emotional Quotient (EQ) can grow and be developed over time. By learning to understand your emotions and the emotions held by others and more effectively manage yours and theirs you can produce better results for yourself your relationships with others and for the entire organization.

Ideally the program would be preceded by a one to two hour dinner or gathering the evening before training. During this time focus would be given to individual purpose statement development – an important tool for applying the emotional intelligence tools learned during training.
Emotional Competency Inventory (ECI) 360 Degree
It is one thing to feel that you are behaving in an emotionally intelligent manner and perhaps quite another to understand the perceptions of others regarding your actions. A person willing to ask for the perceptions of others acquires the advantage of understanding how their behavior influences others and the organization. Confidential input from peers direct reports and those to whom you report can provide rich information and identify gaps where growth can occur.
The ECI is a 360-degree tool designed to assess the emotional competencies of individuals and organizations. It is based on emotional competencies identified by Dr. Daniel Goleman in Working with Emotional Intelligence (1998) and on competencies from Hay/McBer’s Generic Competency Dictionary (1996 ) as well as Dr. Richard Boyatzis’s Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ). The assessment is administered electronically and the results are compiled into an individual report. The results are then shared in a follow-up coaching session by a certified ECI Analyst.

Do you know if the activity that occurs in your organization on a day to day basis is aligned with the policy and/or operations manual? Often the passage of time either causes outdated practices to linger or procedures to develop and take on a life of their own. Following a thorough review of your organization’s policy/operations manual experienced consultants work with the people in your organization to identify the match between written policy and/ or procedures and what actually occurs during daily practice. A report is created identifying gaps in policy versus practice along with recommendations. Optional assistance is also available to support the organization in addressing the gaps identified during the analysis.
